The beautiful land of Kashmir has been engulfed with violence and bloody conflict regarding the ownership and control of the state since the time of Independence.
But who owned the place before the present day ? What kind of people lived there is historic times ?
Kashmir has seen many rulers and conflicts until now, from being a land of Buddhism to becoming a home to Islam , Kashmir that we see today has been through a lot of changes.
Here is a brief history of time in the Paradise on Earth.
About 2300 years ago , the capital , Srinagar was founded by the ruler , Chakrawarti Samrat Ashok. Buddhist rule was introduced for the first time. Shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva were constructed at Srinagar. Later on came the Kushan dynasty and Karkota empire.
In 1339 the valley was attacked by Mongolian ruler , Dulucha. Later on Shah Mir became the first Islamic ruler of the valley.
Srinagar was made capital of Kashmir around 960 CE under the Hindu rulers of Shahis of Kabul.
Until the 14th century , Hindu and Buddhist rule continued in the valley but was later on under control of Mughal rulers.
Akbar conquered Kashmir in 1587 A.D. Hindus were well taken care of during his rule and were entitled to right to property and also given government jobs. The word ‘ Kashmiri Pandit ” was provided by him.
Mughal rule was replaced by Afghan conquerors. Slowly , the inhabitants started converting to Islam although the majority of the population still remained Hindus.
After the last ruler of Mughal empire, Aurengzeb died , the valley came under attack from Pushtan tribes and the land became ruled by the Durrani Empire.
